What it is about

ADHD begins in childhood, but many people are only diagnosed as adults. Often they have found their own ways of coping for years. That takes energy, and at some point it is no longer enough, for example with more responsibility at work or a family of their own.

Perhaps some of this sounds familiar:

  • With tasks that do not hold your interest, you quickly lose the thread, even though you try hard.
  • Appointments, deadlines and everyday things keep slipping out of view.
  • Inner restlessness, impatience or hasty decisions have been with you for a long time.
  • Your feelings flare up quickly and take a long time to settle again.
  • Someone in your family has been diagnosed with ADHD, and you recognise yourself in it.

Many people have experiences like these, with or without ADHD. Whether there is more to it can only be answered by careful examination. That is exactly what the assessment is for.

How the assessment works

I carry out the assessment myself as a licensed psychological psychotherapist. The individual steps are usually spread over three appointments. The testing consists of a structured interview and standardised questionnaires that you complete online between appointments. I follow the S3 clinical guideline on ADHD, the professional standard in Germany.

  1. First appointment

You tell me what has led you to wonder about ADHD and how you are getting on day to day. Together we decide whether the assessment is the right next step.

  2. Is it ADHD?

ADHD can only be diagnosed if the difficulties were already present in childhood. In a structured interview we therefore go through your childhood and your everyday life today. Questionnaires that you complete online complement the interview.

  3. How pronounced, and how much of a burden?

Your own assessment and, where possible, that of someone close to you show how pronounced the traits are. Just as important is how much they weigh on you at work, in relationships and at home. Both help later when choosing a treatment.

  4. Could something else be behind it?

Some difficulties resemble ADHD, for example with depression, anxiety, the after-effects of distressing experiences, strong mood swings or autism. I therefore also check whether something else explains your difficulties better or plays an additional role.

  5. Feedback session

Finally, we discuss the result in detail. You receive a written report, which also sets out which treatment I consider sensible.

What you can bring

  • school reports, especially from primary school: teachers' comments on participation and behaviour can provide clues
  • earlier reports, doctors' letters or findings, if you have them
  • a list of the medication you take
  • if possible, the view of a parent, sibling or partner

If documents are missing, that is not an obstacle. We work with what is available.

After the assessment

Every assessment is open-ended. If ADHD is diagnosed, simply understanding yourself better often helps. In cognitive behavioural therapy you can learn new ways of dealing with planning, distraction and strong feelings. I offer this treatment at my practice.

If the assessment does not point to ADHD, that is a finding too. It often becomes clearer where your difficulties come from, and together we consider what would help you.

Fees

The ADHD assessment costs about €600, including the written report. I do not bill your health insurer directly. You receive an invoice from me based on the official German fee schedule for psychotherapists (GOP). Whether and how much your private health insurer or Beihilfe (the medical allowance for civil servants) reimburses depends on your policy and the rules that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

No. My practice is a private practice, so you can contact me directly.

What if I no longer have my school reports?

Then we work with what you and people close to you remember. School reports are helpful, but not a requirement.

Will I get medication after the diagnosis?

Medication is prescribed by doctors. If you are considering medication, you can take my report to your doctor. I offer psychotherapeutic support for ADHD myself.

Is a physical examination part of it?

It is not part of my assessment. It is still advisable, for example to rule out physical causes, and I will give you a recommendation for it.

What happens if ADHD is not diagnosed?

Then we discuss what better explains your difficulties and what might help. That result is also an answer to your question.

I already have an ADHD diagnosis. Can I have it reviewed?

Yes. For an existing diagnosis I offer a second opinion. I first form my own picture of you, and the outcome is not decided in advance.

Can the assessment be done in English?

Yes. I can conduct the interviews in English, and the common questionnaires are also available in English.
